Colombian President's Endorsement Triggers American Outrage Over Foreign Interference

Colombian President's Endorsement Triggers American Outrage Over Foreign Interference

In an unexpected twist in the ongoing saga of U.S.-Colombia relations, Democrats on the House Foreign Affairs Committee have found themselves in a tizzy over the fact that a Colombian president is meddling in American elections—except this time, it’s Abelardo de la Espriella, who just so happens to be a naturalized American citizen. Apparently, only foreigners who are not American citizens are allowed to interfere in U.S. political affairs, according to a wholly invented rule that seems to have emerged just for this occasion.

Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) took to the podium to deliver a scathing condemnation, insisting, "The American people decide who represents them in the House, not foreign leaders!" Of course, this is hardly the first time a foreigner has weighed in on U.S. politics—just ask the legions of international pundits who make a living off of critiquing America’s myriad electoral shortcomings while sipping lattes in cozy cafes across Europe. But hey, let’s not let a little logic get in the way of a good old-fashioned political meltdown!

Meeks then reminded the world of the two-century-long friendship between the U.S. and Colombia, an alliance built on mutual democracy, or at least as democratic as it can be when one of the key players is a dual citizen. Interestingly, the fact that de la Espriella holds dual citizenship was glossed over in this official rebuke. It seems the Democrats are more interested in the optics of a foreign leader meddling than in the reality of a fellow American simply expressing support for a political ally.

In a social media endorsement reminiscent of early 2000s reality TV, de la Espriella declared Rep. María Elvira Salazar as “Colombia’s best friend in the United States Congress,” proving that even political endorsements can come laced with a friendly dose of high school drama. Salazar, for her part, reciprocated the affection as if they were exchanging prom king and queen titles, promising that she would always be there for Colombia. Talk about a diplomatic love fest!

Ironically, Rep. Meeks's outrage comes as many Americans feel that their own elections are more susceptible to foreign interference than they’d like to admit. With countless foreign entities pouring money and influence into campaigns, it's a bit rich to single out one Colombian-American president for expressing support for a candidate in a country he calls home. But it’s always easier to point fingers than confront the chaos of our own electoral process.

The Complexity of Dual Citizenship in Politics

As this melodrama unfolds, one wonders whether next on the chopping block will be other politically active dual citizens. Will we hear condemnations of American expats in Canada supporting local candidates? How about American citizens living abroad objecting to their homeland's policies? The real question here is, will anyone tell Rep. Meeks that the real meddling may just be in the way we define citizenship and influence?

While Rep. Meeks threatens to unravel the delicate threads of bipartisan goodwill toward Colombia—an act that would surely send shockwaves through the already complicated diplomatic waters—his comments about de la Espriella's endorsement bring into question the very fabric of what it means to be an engaged citizen. Citizens, whether dual or singular, should be encouraged to participate in democracy—especially in their adopted homeland. Yet, here we are, wading through the absurdity of labeling a dual citizen’s endorsement as meddling, while simultaneously ignoring all the other foreign influences that swirl around American elections.

Applied to you

Winning the battle over who gets to influence American politics is often less about the individual endorsements and more about the cozy relationships between elected officials and foreign interests. So, as the drama continues and Americans prepare for the next election cycle, perhaps we should take a moment to thank President de la Espriella for reminding us that democracy is not only about who votes but also about who supports whom.

Let’s hope that the next time a Colombian president endorses a U.S. candidate, they check first to see if their American citizenship status is up to par to avoid another diplomatic faux pas. After all, who knew that friendship could be so complicated?
